sing with me
Singing with others, especially in folk and traditional styles, has become one of my deepest passions and medicines. I am a learner, not an expert, and you are warmly invited to join me on this journey. Subscribe to my newsletter to stay updated on current offerings.
Future Ancestors Folk Choir
choir members performing at a community event
Future Ancestors Folk Choir is an experimental, non-auditioned choir born out of exploring traditional singing styles among friends. Human communities have sung together since time immemorial- only in recent history has this vital practice has been stripped from day to day life through displacement, colonization and other forms of violence. Future Ancestors is driven by a desire for cultural practice that is ancient and enduring, yet alive in the present, seeking to re-learn shared musicality that brings us closer to the earth and one another.
Currently we learn seasonal folk songs together, mostly in multi-part harmony or polyphony. We learn mostly by ear, with printed lyric sheets. So far most of our music has derived from various European folk backgrounds, and occasionally from modern composers. We have sung songs from Ireland, Ukraine, the republic of Georgia, England and more, centering themes of nature, liberation, and connection with the divine. This choir works best for those who can match pitch, but you do not have to be an experienced harmony singer.
For this upcoming season we will learn songs of winter, including joyful carols, meditative hymns, rowdy wassail songs, and more. Rehearsals will be Thursdays 6:30-8:30 PM in an open-air barn in the Nisqually Valley off exit 114. We will conclude our Fall/Winter season with a performance at a community Winter Solstice event and fundraiser on Friday, December 5th 2025. Further info and registration here.
